Your therapeutic INR range is prescribed by your physician and varies with each individual. Most commonly patients will be prescribed a therapeutic range of (INR) 2.0 – 3.0. This is considered your safe range and while you are here your blood is being anti-coagulated at the proper level. If your INR drops below your therapeutic range you risk forming a clot and possibly having a stroke. If your INR rises above your therapeutic range you risk internal bleeding. Weekly home testing acts as a preventative measure allows your physician to more effectively manage your coumadin therapy thus keeping you within your safe therapeutic range more often.
