Event Monitor (Loop recorder)

Definition: An event monitor is a portable, battery-powered device that allows your to monitor your heart’s electrical activities. Most monitors record your ECG or EKG daily and document when you have slow or fast heartbeats, when you feel dizzy, or feel like you want to faint. There are no risks involved in using one. Results are often sent to a physician or receiving center via phone or stored in the memory of the monitor.

Example: An Event Monitor may give your physician information like if your pacemaker or ICD is working properly, if your heart is getting enough oxygen, if your medication is working, or identifying why you have symptoms of chest pain, dizziness, or if your heart is racing or skipping beats.
