Definition: An object, commonly a blood clot or piece of fatty deposit, that is carried into the bloodstream and gets lodged in a vessel. Multiple embolus are referred to as emboli and there are many different types of emboli resulting from different substances.

Examples: The different types of embolisms include fat embolism, cholesterol embolism, thromboembolism (blood clot), air embolism, septic embolism ( bacteria containing pus), foreign body embolism, and amniotic fluid embolism
