ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)

Definition: ECMO is a type of life support for those who are unable to supply their bodies with enough oxygen for proper blood circulation. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation uses a pump to circulate blood through an artificial lung and back into the bloodstream.

Examples: Examples of situations requiring the initiation of ECMO can include acute severe cardiac failure, potentially reversible pulmonary failure, Hypoxemic respiratory failure within specified guidelines, cardiac arrest, hypercapnic respiratory failure with an atterial pH less than 7.20, failure to come successfully come off of cardiopulmonary bypass following cardiac surgery, or as a bridge during a heart transplantation or placement of a ventricular assist device.
